What 1,015 CEO LinkedIn Posts Taught Me About What Actually Works

June 20, 2023

If you want to know what actually moves the needle for an executive on LinkedIn, stop guessing and look at the data. My team analyzed 1,015 LinkedIn posts from our CEO and founder clients in a single month. A few of the findings ran directly against the advice you hear repeated everywhere.

The five findings

1. Hashtags hurt. Posts with hashtags performed about 50% worse than posts without them. The “always add five hashtags” advice is a holdover from a different platform and a different era.

2. Photos help — a lot. Posts with a photo got roughly 115% more views than text-only posts. A relevant image is one of the cheapest performance upgrades available.

3. Reshares are weak. Resharing someone else’s content was only about 25% as effective as posting original content. Your own point of view is the asset; amplifying others is not a substitute for it.

4. Ending on a question backfires. Posts that closed with a question did about 30% worse than posts that ended without one. The “ask a question to drive comments” trick tends to read as a manufactured engagement bait, and audiences (and the algorithm) discount it.

5. Tag people, not companies. Tagging a company made no measurable difference. Tagging an individual increased views by about 16% — because a tagged person is far more likely to engage, and their engagement extends reach.

Why this matters

None of these tactics matter if the underlying content is generic. The reason I track this data is not to chase a clever hack — it is to strip away the noise so a leader’s real expertise can land. An executive’s edge on LinkedIn is a specific, hard-won point of view. The mechanics above simply remove friction so that view reaches the right people.

Treat findings like these as a snapshot, not scripture. Platforms change, and the numbers shift. But the principle holds across every analysis I have run: the format optimizations are marginal; the substance is everything. Get the point of view right first, then let the data tune the delivery.

If you are a CEO deciding how to show up, the takeaway is simple. Drop the hashtags. Add a relevant image. Post your own thinking rather than reshares. Make a statement instead of fishing for comments. And when it is natural, tag the specific people your post is actually about.
